Gestational Diabetes
Many of the women I work with who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes tell me a nurse calls them and tells them they failed their glucose tolerance test. This is pretty standard medical terminology, but it makes the pregnant person feel like they've done something wrong.
I want to be a supporter of the person by giving them hope, helping them to maintain their independence and as normal a life as possible, and taking this thing by the horns. Sometimes I tell people that if they are stubborn, they can do this - they're not going to let diabetes beat them. They're going to conquer their diabetes.

Gestational Diabetes can be a scary and overwhelming feeling. When diagnosed with this, there isn’t too much education or discussion around what it is, what this means for you and your baby during and after pregnancy.
The truth is, gestational diabetes can be resolved and may never creep back up to bother you again. However, more often than not women with gestational diabetes in one pregnancy are likely to have it in their other pregnancies.
Women with gestational diabetes are also at higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes later in life. Therefore, being diagnosed with gestational diabetes is a big deal and it is important to meet with a dietitian who can take the time to explain to you what this really means.
