Let me just say, our approach is different.
If you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS or have spent time researching it on the web, you know that everything out there is confusing and not helpful. There’s hardly any direction or explanation from doctors or healthcare members, and it feels like you don’t even really know what PCOS is or how it will impact you… only that x y and z could go wrong.
Most women diagnosed with PCOS are told “lose weight and exercise more.” You may have also learned that weight loss is harder when you have PCOS and its something that you just have to “live with and manage.”
PCOS is probably one of the most frustrating diagnoses to get as a woman.
What causes PCOS? Unknown. Its likely a combination of genetics and environmental factors, but that doesn’t help much does it.
Women with PCOS have a hormonal imbalance that typically results in their ovaries producing more androgens than normal which impact fertility, insulin sensitivity, and weight. High androgen levels can cause acne, hair growth in non-typical patterns for females, and is completely individualized to each person what symptoms they have.
Research is still young when it comes to PCOS and we have come a long way in the last 20 years in how we discuss and diagnose PCOS. Research is also still young when it comes to how you should eat and exercise.
whats bamboo nutrition’s approach?
We have a unique approach. Our overall goal is for you to be happy, feel good, and not feel hung up on this diagnosis. Women live full lives every day with PCOS while others let this confusing diagnosis get the best of them. These women typically get trapped in the dieting cycle, never feel confident in their bodies, and struggle accepting themselves. We don’t want this to be you.
So we work with you as a person. A whole person. You are more than just a woman with PCOS. Maybe you have a family, a fur baby, a passion for your career, are a care-taker for your parents, or are full of potential and still finding yourself. Nutrition is more than what it can do for your PCOS and body image goes beyond this diagnosis.
Together we work with you to find a way of eating that makes you feel better and does not trigger your PCOS. We work with you to find a positive relationship with food and your body. Regardless of what diet culture says, there is more you can do for yourself than focus on weight loss alone. Many studies show that the more you focus on weight loss, the less happy you are and the more likely you are to end up with disordered eating and unintentional weight gain.
Ready for a refreshing mindset shift?
What is different about our approach is we actually don’t focus on weight loss. That is not the name of our game. We are more concerned about how you feel in your body, how you eat based on emotional and physical sensations, what your stress is like, how much sleep you get and if that is quality…. are you catching on now? Weight is not our focus because to us, it is not the cure for your symptoms.
Studies on intuitive eating demonstrate that intuitive eaters are more likely that women who diet to have a healthier body and more body confidence.
If you’re ready for an approach like this, we are ready for you! If not, that is ok. We understand that weight loss is a hard thing to put on the backburner and this approach is not for everyone. If you have more questions, we are happy to answer them for you.
